gOE to Develop Culture Assessment

The Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine announced that it has awarded a grant to The Group for Organizational Effectiveness (gOE) to develop a validated safety culture measure and related tools for promoting safety in the offshore energy industry. We have assembled a great team of collaborators from Rice University, The University of Connecticut, The McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Houston, and the Offshore Operators Committee to work with us on this effort.

Organizations must work safely to avert mishaps, both large and small. It is far better to anticipate and avoid accidents than to respond to them. In the Offshore Energy industry, as in any high-risk setting, there is a clear need to uncover and address potential safety issues before they become significant problems.

This multi-year project will produce a set of empirically-tested, evidence-based tools to diagnose and track key factors at the individual, team, team leader, and organization levels. The measures will be accompanied by actionable tips and guidance for addressing potential deficiencies. At the conclusion of the effort, gOE will make these tools and tips available to all interested organizations, associations, and researchers. As appropriate, lessons learned will also be incorporated in our gOEbase toolkit.
